About

You’re Not Alone is an engaging artwork that is activated as participants encounter and pass one another during the Struer Tracks biennial. A rendition of the chorus "You’re Not Alone" from the 1990s hit by Tim Kellett and Robin Taylor-Firth is performed by citizens of Struer and played via mobile phones.

The piece explores the connections that emerge and exist between individuals and the technologies that are integrated into our daily lives. The project will be present in various contexts as participants move through publicly accessible spaces such as the library and the town hall, transitioning between physical and digital environments. "You’re Not Alone" provides a platform for reflection on themes such as community, identity, loneliness, digital ethics, and human connections.

"You’re Not Alone" serves as a dynamic and portabel monument that evolves as those involved navigate between different public, commercial, and private arenas.

All aspects of existence are subject to change in relation to geography and time, and my practice navigates between the geopolitical landscape and the ultra-local, establishing frameworks for dialogue and reflection. The exploration of truth and identity, which are inherently tied to perspective and context, forms a central element of my artistic work. This perspective encompasses both communities and objects, whose meanings evolve depending on temporal and spatial contexts.

The work You’re Not Alone highlights the connections that exist between people, as well as the fundamental condition that we are interconnected — both in close relationships, in society, and in nation-states — unfolding within a reality shaped by crises.

Struer Tracks is a three-day biennial event dedicated to sound and listening in public spaces, curated by Jacob Eriksen. With the title ‘Communal Practice’, the fifth edition of Struer Tracks aims to explore how communities are established in various forms and shapes through sound and listening. The biennial will concentrate on new and unexpected connections, as well as on highlighting already existing intersections and encounters.

The way to engage individuals in a larger artwork has been developed through several projects, where intangible elements are transformed into tangible forms via the involved carriers of sensory experiences. Since the Biennale is connected to the outside world, You’re Not Alone can spread to the rest of the world and is thus changeable, just as the duration is flexible with a focused execution and an open ending and as such the afterlife constitutes a significant part of the work. The technology enables a more precise understanding of the dynamic nature of the project by preserving data that allows the project to be documented in an artistic way that preserves the anonymity of the users.

Collaboration

The project was developed during a research residency at Sound Art Lab in Struer in June 2024 and is specifically tailored to reflect the city's distinctive character. Throughout the process, numerous encounters, informal discussions, meetings, listening, an Open by Night event, communal meals, and a singing evening organized in collaboration with Struer Library took place.

The project has been realized thanks to generous support from the Ny Carlsberg Foundation, the Danish Arts Foundation, as well as many dedicated local partners.

The verse "You’re Not Alone" is sung by various citizens and recorded in connection with a Listening Evening at Sound Art Lab on May 27, 2025. Thank you for lending your voices.
